Group Leaders

  • Have some enthusiasm for the subject!
  • Be able to communicate to members (verbally and/or electronically)
  • Keep in touch with our Group Co-ordinator
  • Pass on any relevant information from the u3a Group Co-ordinator
  • Keep a few records of group membership
  • Keep simple financial records - mainly if your group pays for a venue
  • Ensure membership is up to date
  • Reply to requests from new members or taster members
  • A teacher - your role is to co-ordinate and encourage your members to contribute, not to stand up and teach (unless you want to)
  • A subject expert - your group will learn together, although it helps if you have some knowledge or ideas for what/how to run your group
  • IT literate - just ask for support from the Group Co-ordinator, our Committee have lots of IT skills we can share with you
  • A financial expert - our Treasurer will show you what simple records may be needed - these are mainly if you decided to rent a venue
  • Alone - you can have a joint leader or deputy, or even a committee!
  • Anxious - the Group Co-ordinator will support and help you get started. There is also the National u3a "Subject Network" where you can pick up ideas about your subject and chat to u3a "Subject Experts" for their advise on running your group.
  • Set a timetable - you may have some ideas how to structure your group but you should encourage your group members to contribute ideas and suggestions and maybe take turns to organise, or help organise a session
